Joe’s career as a leader was forged during his twenty-four years as an officer in the United States Air Force. He is a highly decorated veteran who deployed in support of seven overseas operations, moved to a new address 19 times, and either served in or visited 39 countries. He commanded five units at the wing, group, and squadron levels, completing his career as the commander of the Air Force’s only combat-coded deployable communications wing. His military background, particularly in the area of leading airmen, definitively shaped his personality and character. Throughout his career, his greatest passion was to see airmen succeed in their missions and their careers.
Along the way, he and his wife joined an 800-year old religious order of the Catholic Church. Joe believes the integrity he seeks though his spiritual life helps him bring additional perspective to his work and greater authenticity for his clients.
Joe earned a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master’s degree in business administration from Boston University. He attended the Air Force Institute of Technology, the Naval War College, and the Air War College, earning a Master’s degree and distinguished graduate honors in management information systems, national security studies, and strategic studies respectively. He is also pursuing a Doctor of Liberal Arts from his alma mater.
Joe is on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis, where he teaches in the master of cyber security management program. He has published articles and papers on cyberspace operations, network-centric warfare, deployed communication, and command and control. He was the principal author and team leader for the first national military strategy for cyberspace operations. This policy document subsequently shaped the Department of Defense’s response to the challenges and threats in that domain.
A popular and sought-after speaker, Joe is an experienced teacher of leadership skills and an expert in creating the total team effort required to fight and win on the battlefield, in the business arena, and in service organizations.
